2010 Biennal Conference

Dining Around Drake

There are several dining options in the Drake neighborhood, nearly all of which can provide you with meals under $10, and plenty more for $10 to $20, or more. All are within easy walking distance (5-15 minutes) of the Fine Arts Center. (See map for locations.) Those looking for more upscale dining will need to venture further off campus, which means a car is recommended.

  • China Place (2414 University): Cheap, unpretentious, and tasty standard Chinese dishes.
  • Drake Diner (1111 25th St.): Great breakfasts, with a wide range of sandwiches and other typical diner standbys. Good vegetarian options are also available, along with fantastic milkshakes. Full bar available.
  • Gazali’s (1205 25th St.): Gyros, falafel, and other Mediterranean fare. Lunch only.
  • KFC/Taco Bell (3200 Forest): Want to eat something cheap and bad for you, but aren’t sure what? Here ya go—two options in one building.
  • Hoshi Sushi Lounge (2314 University): Recently opened, featuring sushi and other Japanese dishes along with a full bar. Lunch specials available.
  • Jethro’s BBQ (3102 Forest): A friendly neighborhood BBQ joint-cum-sports bar, with some really excellent sandwiches, smoked meats, and sides (try the jalapeño creamed corn or sweet potato fries). Full bar.
  • Jimmy John’s (2416 University): Sub sandwiches made fresh and ridiculously fast.
  • La Rosa (2312 Forest): Authentic Mexican food at unbelievably cheap prices. Try the tamales, a house specialty.
  • Mars Café (2318 University): The hippest coffeehouse/wine bar in the Drake neighborhood. A limited menu of light snacks and desserts is also available, along with great pizza from Frank’s Pizza in the evenings. Takeaway coffee & tea.
  • McDonald’s (3002 Forest): As one of the former company CEOs is a major benefactor to the Department of Music, I am happy to recommend this franchise to you all.
  • Paul Revere’s Pizza (3018 Forest): Remember those cheap pizzas you munched down when you were an undergraduate? Good times. Delivery recommended, as seating is very limited.
  • Planet Sub (2330 University): Wide array of soups and grilled subs (including several vegetarian options).
  • Starbucks (1315 31st St.): For those of you who need your decaf soy vente mochaccino. Or just coffee.
  • Subway (3011 Forest): For those of you who don’t care for Jimmy John’s, you have a sub sandwich alternative here.
  • Tacos Mariana’s (2225 University): Like La Rosa, cheap and cheerful and beautifully authentic Mexican food, focusing on (no surprise) tacos.
  • University Library Café (2506 University): More a bar than a café, but a pleasantly divey one, and featuring truly outstanding nachos.
  • Woody’s Smoke Shack (2511 Cottage Grove): Another brilliant and multi-award-winning barbecue place, with different specials daily. (The pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches are great.) Only open till 4 on Saturday.
