Getting to York

By air
The most direct route is via Toronto’s Lester Pearson International Airport. There are a few other options that may be less expensive for some travelers, though some feature more limited service and all will involve additional travel by car, train, or bus:

Hamilton, ON (42 miles/68 kilometers)
Buffalo, NY (96 miles/154 kilometers)
London, ON (108 miles/175 kilometers
Rochester, NY (159 miles/257 kilometers)
Detroit, MI (236 miles/382 kilometers)

By taxi and/or public transit from the airport:
Taxis are always conveniently available as soon as you exit the terminal buildings at Toronto Pearson International Airport, and fares to the city centre and York University are approximately $40-$50. Recommended.

Toronto Public Transit
http://www.toronto.ca/ttc/
To get to York University’s Keele Campus from the airport, you must first take a bus, then the subway, and then another bus.  The cost is $2.75.  The amount is paid while getting onto the first bus, and valid the whole way to York University. Remember to ask the bus driver for a transfer ticket, and keep this on you for the whole journey.  It will take approximately 90 minutes to get to York University.  The suggested routes are:

  • Bus 192 leaves the airport from terminals 1, 2 or 3 to Kipling Station. Then take subway: Eastbound to St.-George Station; then change to the Northbound subway line to Downsview Station; then take the Express bus 196 to York University.
  • Bus 58A leaves the airport from terminals 2 or 3 to Lawrence West Station; then get on the subway to Downsview Station; then take Express Bus 196 to York University.

By train
Toronto’s Union Station is located near the waterfront at 65 Front Street West, and is served by VIA Rail Canada, Amtrak, Go Transit, and Ontario Northland. Public transit and taxis are also both available from the station. For more information on hours and amenities, please see http://www.viarail.ca/train-stations/en-station-toronto-ontario.html.

Accommodation

On-Campus Accommodation at York will be in two-bedroom suites in the newest student residence (2004), Pond Road.  Each suite features separate rooms with en-suite bathroom and kitchen. Accolade East, where all papers will be given, is steps away and there is parking nearby in the Bennett Student Centre. Cost: $80 per night, including taxes. See registration form for booking details; you can specify a suite-sharer if you wish.

For more information, see  http://www.yorku.ca/stuhouse/undergrad/pondroad.htm

Additional on-campus accommodation A few rooms are being held at the Executive Learning Centre, Schulich School of Business at $170 per night. At present these are being reserved for the keynote speaker and others who have made a special request.  It is possible that more rooms in this hotel may become available. We would advise booking

Pond Road in the first instance, indicating on the registration form that you would like to be on the waiting list for Schulich, and we will try to accommodate your request should a room become available.

Off-campus   Rooms have been booked at the Holiday Inn Express, Norfinch Avenue, North York. For details see:
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/yyzny?_requestid=369566
Rates are $110 plus applicable taxes. The hotel is about a 5-minute drive from the campus; although buses run along Finch Avenue, a taxi is advised—particularly for those not familiar with the area. It is not a sylvan walk to campus—and you would need to allow 20-30 minutes. Please book directly with the hotel and state the NABMSA connection. The block of rooms will be held until June 30, 2008.

Eating at York

The cost of the opening reception, lunches and breaks on Friday and Saturday are included in the registration fees. These will be provided during the conference in Accolade East and in the Executive Dining Room, Schulich School of Business, directly across from Accolade East. There are a number of cafes and shops located on campus, particularly in York Lanes, a central shopping mall within easy walking distance of the conference site, but do note that many close during the summer months; those that are open have limited seating and may have limited hours of operation during the conference weekend.

For more information see:

Weather

The weather is likely to be HOT and fairly humid, usually in the 80s and 90s Fahrenheit, and possibly higher. Therefore, bring suitable light clothing and footwear with a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings, though you probably won’t need them. Very occasionally we get superb thunderstorms at this time of year, but let's hope they hold off for this particular weekend.

And... for dancing

Please stay for the English Country Dance session on Sunday morning. Soft-soled shoes are best—leather if possible, but you can get away with sneakers if the soles aren’t too new. We have Toronto's favorite caller booked to teach a couple of dances, which are not difficult to pick up—and then call them as they are being danced. There will be live music (with Dorothy de Val’s band, Playford’s Pleasure), so if you don’'t feel like dancing, please come and listen and even jam with us. This is an opportunity not to be missed! A light breakfast will be provided to keep you going.
